RECYCLING, COMPOSTING AND MIXED WASTE COLLECTION
RULES AND REGULATIONS
SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCES

As a service to single family residences, the City of Farmington Hills provides for the collection of mixed waste, recyclables, compost material and bulk items once a week. In an effort to do this in the most cost effective manner, Waste Management of Michigan was selected on a competitive bid basis to provide collection, disposal and recycling services.

To find out what day your collection will take place, please refer to the attached map. Containers, baSs and bundles are to be placed at the curb or at the edge of the street upon which the residence fronts no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the day before collection. All containers must be removed from the curbside no later than twelve hours following collection. Collection can take place anytime between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Collection time may vary week to week. To ensure that your refuse and recyclables are not missed, all cans, bags and the recycling container must be at the curbside by 7:00 a.m.

HOLIDAY COLLECTION

Collection will not be scheduled on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Oay, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. When the above holidays fall during the week, collection schedules will be one day late, with Friday's collection made on Saturday of that week. This will place all routes back on schedule the following Monday.

MIXED WASTE. RECYCLABLES AND COMPOSTABLES

The following is a list of material that will be collected if properly prepared and placed at the curb.

I. MIXED WASTE

Mixed waste can be described as a mixture of garbage and rubbish. Mixed waste can be place at the curb in any of the following containers:

Metal Containers - Must not be less than 10 gallons or more than 30 gallons in capacity, water tight with handles and tight fitting lids. Total weight of containers and contents is not to exceed 60 pounds. Please do not fill containers above the rims.

Plastic Containers - Must not be less than 10 gallons or more than 30 gallons in capacity, water tight with handles and tight fitting lids. Total weight of containers and contents is not to exceed 60 pounds. Please do not fill containers above the rims.

Plastic Baqs - Must not be less than 10 gallon and not more than 30 gallon capacity and not less than 2 mil strength. Total weight of bag and contents shall not exceed 40 pounds. Cardboard boxes are not acceptable containers.

II. COMMINGLED RECYCLABLES

Commingled recyclables are materials that are separated from mixed waste prior to collection. Recyclables include newspaper, tin cans, green, clear and brown glass and plastic containers. Recyclables will be placed in a single approved container provided by the City for collection at curbside. The container will be green and have an 18 gallon capacity, and comes with a bevelled lid. It shall remain the property of the City of FarminSton Hills. Put your address on the white bar provided on the outside of the bin.

Recyclables must be prepared in the following manner:

NEWSPAPER: Newsprint only, remove all glossy inserts, non glossy inserts and comics can be included.

PLASTIC: Milk and water jugs, laundry detergent bottles or any rigid plastic with a 1 or 2 stamped on the bottom. Do not include motor oil containers. Remove cap, it is not recyclable. Rinse container, labels may stay on. Flatten if possible.

TIN CANS: Food and beverage cans, rinse and remove label. Flatten if possible.

GLASS: Clear, brown and green bottles and jars. Remove lid, it is not recyclable. Rinse container, label may stay on.

If your recycling bin is stolen you must report it to the City of Farmington Hills Police Department for their investigation. Replacement bins can be purchased from the City of Farmington Hills.

III. COMPOSTABLES/YARD WASTE

Compost is the miscellaneous Organic waste material resulting from landscaping and/or maintenance of a home or property including but not limited to grass, weeds, fallen leaves, shrub and plant clippings, plant materials, twigs and small limbs (not to exceed 6 diameter of 4' in length). Compost service will be provided from April 1 through November 15 each year. In addition, Christmas trees will be collected if placed at the curb within three weeks following Christmas.

Approved Container - Compost will not be collected unless it is in a clear plastic bag, or in a metal or plastic (30 gallon) container with a vard waste only sticker. Stickers will be supplied by the City at no charge, do not place stickers on plastic baSs. Twigs and small branches can be bundled, not to exceed 4 ft. in length or 60 lbs per bundle.

IV. BULK ITEMS

A bulk item can be described as a large piece of furniture, bed springs, refrigerator (with the doors removed), stove and Other such items incidental to housekeeping for and in single family residences, as defined in the ordinance.

Bulk items will be picked up if put at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your regularly scheduled collection day. you do not have to call in advance for bulk item pick up.

V. CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS. TREE STUMPS, ETC.

Construction debris, unbundled brush, tree stumps or other items not included in the curbside program can be taken to the Waste Management drop-off center on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p-m- The drop-off center is located at the Waste Management yard, 19200 W. Eight Mile Road, Southfield, MI. (northside of 8 Mile between Lasher and Evergreen). There will be a fee charged for all refuse dropped off at the center in accordance with the fee schedule below. The fees are approximate only. There may be a special charge for individual items, such as tree stumps or large unusual items.

Should you require a special pickup of construction debris, tree stumps or similar items directly from your home, contact Waste Management, Inc. at 357-0100 for a cost quotation.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

Household hazardous waste, paint thinner, pesticides, herbicides, batteries, etc., will not be collected at the curbside. Instead, household hazardous waste will be collected twice a year at a location and time to be announced in the City's newsletter and in the local newspaper.

SERVICE FEE

Service fees are set annually by the Farmington Hills City Council, billed to your residence quarterly by the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County (RRRASOC). Delinquent fees will be placed as a lien on your property tax bill.

PENALTY

These rules and regulations have been written in conjunction with the authority granted in Chapter 14 of the Farmington Hills' City Code, the Recycling, Composting and Solid Waste Disposal Ordinance. An infraction of these rules shall be a violation of the ordinance.
